Do you remember back in 2018 when we were iLab laureates (French Deep Tech startup award) ? Being amongst the winners of this national competition and being recognised by the Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche and Bpifrance was huge for us !

Well, this story continues.. Last May, in the midst of a lockdown, with each SpotLighter working remotely, we gathered our strengths and resources to submit our application to the next level DeepTech competition ‘i-Nov’ by Bpifrance.

July came with the oral presentation of our application to the panel of judges through a visio conference. End of November : here we were, signing. Our project named ‘Groot’ was live.

The deeptech side of our project was once again acknowledged and recognised by Bpifrance with an award letter coming directly from the government general secretariat for investment.

This recognition and financial support will help implementing our technical roadmap for the next 2 years, to achieve our goal to industrialize our solution and extend its use, but this also allowed us to hire two brilliant SpotLighters, Julia & Léna. Supporting graduate employement in today’s time is also a pride for us.

Extremely proud that our co-founder and CTO, Elodie Morgan presented our 1st paper ‘Focused and Continuous Ultra-Light Seismic Monitoring: A Gas Storage Example’ after months of work and research at the EAGE online 2020 on the 9th of December.

Summary

Common appraisal methods for oil and gas reservoir often begin with 3D seismic and exploration wells. These technologies provide spatial recognition along with focused stratigraphy and subsurface resources content. Even though models and simulations predict a reservoir dynamic, measuring this key component in time complements spatial technologies while providing relevant information regarding field optimization. Further intents to go towards continuous monitoring have demonstrated the capability for seismic to detect reliable short-term calendar 4D effects that would be missed by conventional 4D seismic. These techniques have proven efficiency yet remain expensive; this paper presents a new light seismic asset monitoring solution.

An ultra-light continuous monitoring method has been developed to focus on a specific “spot” location defined by reservoir engineer studies. To illuminate a given spot, a seismic spread, composed of one receiver and one source position, is defined by analysis of existing 3D seismic data. This procedure allows for a very high temporal density monitoring tool targeted at a specific reservoir location and is economically attractive.

This production case study gives further understanding about an active gas storage dynamic showing encouraging results for such a light asset monitoring tool and paves the way for focused and continuous seismic monitoring.

Introducing the SpotCare project!

Objective: Monitoring geological gas storage using the world’s lightest seismic monitoring solution.

SpotLight takes pride in coordinating this innovative project, which has come to fruition thanks to a collaborative ecosystem and the ‘InnovUp Experimentation’ program.

A shared ambition: Demonstrating the feasibility of this approach to pave the way for other types of geological storage (e.g., CO2), which are essential for mitigating climate change.

The subsurface plays a crucial role in the energy transition, and the partners of the SpotCare project are mobilizing their expertise to showcase its potential!

SpotLight is revolutionizing the subsurface monitoring sector by offering a practical, innovative, and competitive solution. It caters not only to the Oil & Gas industry but also to other subsurface domains such as geothermal energy, gas/CO2 storage, and volcanology. Co-founders Élodie Morgan and Habib Al Khatib provide explanations of the technology’s capabilities and advantages.

For the past 3 years, SpotLight has been developing a subsurface monitoring tool. Unlike other available solutions on the market, the technology developed by the young start-up allows for surface-level monitoring of all geomechanical changes that may occur in key underground areas. “The goal of our monitoring system is to issue real-time alerts when an event occurs in the subsurface, whether it’s a few meters or several kilometers beneath the ground,” explains Élodie Morgan. SpotLight enables the detection of changes in the subsurface, such as pressure effects, saturation changes, fluid injection or transit, compression or release, fractures, and temperature. This monitoring, which can be performed on an hourly or daily basis, optimizes decision-making processes to deploy corrective actions if necessary at the right time. “SpotLight only focuses on identifying the areas to place the sensors and on processing and exploiting the collected data acquired in real-time. As for the necessary equipment, it consists of standard devices that can be deployed by the company itself or a service provider,” emphasizes Élodie Morgan.

A proven innovative solution

“SpotLight is an innovative and complementary tool to oil and gas field monitoring technologies,” emphasizes Habib Al Khatib. The young company already has several use cases under its belt. “For our first demonstrator, we conducted steam injection monitoring in North America. We detected a leak in an injection well. The hazardous nature of the affected area had been highlighted in a prior assessment, and our intervention confirmed this,” notes Habib Al Khatib. SpotLight has also been used to detect variations in a gas storage facility operated by OMV in the Vienna Basin. The solution has been employed for hydraulic fracturing monitoring to assess its uniformity and extent. “We have also worked on verifying the compartmentalization of an oil field. The goal was to determine if the existing compartments were interconnected, thus avoiding the need for drilling a new well. And indeed, that was the case. It resulted in significant cost savings amounting to tens of thousands of dollars,” explains Habib Al Khatib. He further adds, “Today, we are involved in all these use cases and, with the capital raised, we will explore new applications to demonstrate the industrial viability and scalability of our solution.”

Driving the Energy Transition

The French deep tech startup firmly believes that the subsurface has a crucial role to play in the Energy Transition, including the storage of CO2 underground to meet the COP21’s 2-degree target. “SpotLight can contribute its expertise in this area. Additionally, we also aim to support the Oil & Gas industry in optimizing the production of existing reserves to ensure a steady oil supply during the Energy Transition, without the need to explore and develop sensitive areas such as the Arctic, Alaska, or the Amazon,” concludes Habib Al Khatib.

L’invité de notre émission Green Reflex ce jeudi 13 février 2020 était Habib Al Khatib, cofondateur et président de la start-up SpotLight, qui veut aider à préserver l’environnement en optimisant l’exploitation des sous-sols.

C’est qu’il s’en passe, des choses sous nos pieds ! Ces activités sont d’ailleurs nombreuses, allant des infrastructures routières à la production énergétique. Des domaines qui nécessitent une bonne lecture des activités souterraines, ne serait-ce que pour évaluer les risques et éviter tout désastre humain et écologique. Or cela nécessite une technologie qui n’est aujourd’hui pas des plus accessibles, notamment d’un point de vue financier. C’est dans cette optique que Habib Al Khatib a cofondé SpotLight, pour littéralement “mettre en lumière” ce sous-sol que l’on ne voit pas et ainsi aider ses acteurs à mieux le comprendre et même l’apprivoiser, à moindre coût.

Le géophysicien, qui œuvre en tant que CEO de la start-up, a développé une technique de surveillance sismique légère qui ne nécessite pas de forage ni autre destruction des terrains, puisqu’elle se base sur l’envoi de signaux entre une source et un récepteur placés à la surface de zones critiques appelées “spots”. Cet outil, baptisé SpotDetection, permet de donner des informations sur ce qu’il se passe en sous-sol, de quelques mètres à plusieurs kilomètres sous terre, en temps réel. SpotLight accompagne ses clients en mettant non seulement son outil révolutionnaire à leur disposition, les conseillant sur son bon emplacement sur le terrain, mais aussi en se chargeant bien sûr d’analyser les données ainsi reçues.

Un exemple concret de ce que SpotLight peut apporter de bénéfique ? À l’heure où la question environnementale est plus brûlante que jamais, Habib Al Khatib a fait un constat : seules 35% des réserves d’un champ pétrolier ou gazier sont exploitées avant que ceux-ci ne doivent être abandonné. Et, alors que le monde se prépare à la transition énergétique, le cofondateur de SpotLight estime qu’il suffirait, en attendant qu’elle soit effective, d’augmenter d’un petit pourcent la production dans ces champs déjà exploités pour ne pas avoir à aller chercher de nouvelles ressources hydrocarbonées dans des lieux d’autant plus sensibles comme l’Amazonie ou l’Antarctique. Une solution que pourrait aisément apporter la technologie proposée par SpotLight.

Et c’est sans compter les désastres écologiques qui pourraient être évités grâce à cette meilleure compréhension des sous-sols, ou encore le rôle que ceux-ci peuvent justement jouer dans la transition écologique… Habib Al Khatib considère en effet qu’ils peuvent être un acteur majeur, avec le développement par exemple de l’énergie renouvelable produite par géothermie ou encore le stockage du CO2, une technique selon le géophysicien qui s’avérera indispensable à l’objectif de limiter le réchauffement climatique à 2°C. Alors raison de plus pour les mettre en lumière, ces sous-sols !

La startup deeptech, basée en région parisienne, a développé le système d’alarme sismique le plus léger du monde. Lauréate de nombreux prix, la jeune pousse prépare une levée de fonds afin de devenir un acteur mondial sur le marché de l’énergie.

Spotlight dompte le sous-sol. Comment ? Grâce à son système de détection de variations du sous-sol en temps réel. « Nous avons développé le système de surveillance sismique du sous-sol le plus léger au monde : la SpotDetection. Il se place en surface et se compose seulement d’une source d’ondes sismiques, ainsi que d’un récepteur pour écouter en permanence tous les changements de comportements souterrains », affirme Habib Al Khatib, co-fondateur et PDG de SpotLight.

Une innovation de rupture déclinable sur plusieurs marchés

À l’origine, cette innovation était destinée à l’industrie pétrolière et gazière, afin de sécuriser et d’optimiser leur production d’hydrocarbures. « Le taux de récupération moyen des champs pétroliers au niveau mondial atteint seulement 35 %. Si ce chiffre augmente d’un pourcent avec une meilleure connaissance de la dynamique des sous-sols, il permettrait d’éviter de nouveaux forages et explorations de ressources fossiles, dans des régions sensibles comme l’Alaska et l’Amazonie. Cela répondra ainsi aux problématiques liées au développement durable », poursuit Habib Al Khatib.

Aujourd’hui, SpotDetection s’adresse à tous les acteurs du sous-sol. La startup a notamment trouvé de nouveaux débouchés dans le génie civil pour surveiller les sous-sols lors de la construction de tunnels, ainsi que dans le stockage de carbone. « Notre mission est de replacer les sous-sols et la géophysique au cœur de la transition énergétique », confirme Élodie Morgan, co-fondatrice et CTO de SpotLight.

Une levée de fonds pour accélérer à l’international

Fort de son innovation phare, la jeune pousse a remporté plusieurs prix, dont la Bourse French Tech Emergence et le concours i-Lab 2018. Cette reconnaissance lui a accordé de la visibilité, lui permettant de remporter de nouveaux contrats. Si bien que SpotLight est en pleine croissance : elle va dépasser ses attentes, cette année, avec des revenus compris entre 200 000 et 300 000 euros.

Pour soutenir sa croissance, cette deeptech française prépare une levée de fonds pour fin 2019/début 2020. « Notre objectif est de lever 1 à 1,5 million d’euros. L’ouverture de notre capital sera réservée à trois catégories d’investisseurs : nos salariés et nos comités d’experts techniques ou stratégiques, des business angels, et un fonds d’investissement. Ce dernier sera amené à nous accompagner dans la durée, afin de devenir un leader mondial dans notre secteur », explique le dirigeant. Les futurs capitaux permettront notamment de recruter des commerciaux et d’accélérer à l’international. SpotLight pourra également compter sur ses trois ans d’avance sur la concurrence : « Nous sommes les seuls à posséder autant de données de suivi sismique en temps réel sur les sous-sols. Cela constitue notre plus grand avantage compétitif et nous comptons capitaliser dessus pour poursuivre notre développement », conclut Habib Al Khatib.
