Toronto, 21/10/2025

At SpotLight, our proudest achievement isn’t just our technology or projects — it’s seeing our SpotLighters grow into confident professionals ready to share their work with the world.

And this October, Pauline did just that.

She presented our joint paper with Whitecap Resources, “The value of Spot Seismic: 4 years of monitoring on the Weyburn site”, at the EAGE CCUS Conference in Toronto. Her first technical presentation marked a major milestone both for her and for SpotLight.

The study showcases the robustness of Spot Seismic for detecting CO₂, with three campaigns conducted between 2022 and 2024. It also includes a comparison with a full 4D seismic survey conducted in 2024, confirming the reliability and complementarity of both technologies.

Spot Seismic provides frequent, localized insights into fluid dynamics, while 4D seismic offers a broader spatial view every four years. Together, they enable a cost-effective and efficient monitoring strategy for CO₂ injection and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

This publication validates nine years of hard work at SpotLight and highlights the power of frequent, focused monitoring to build trust in CCS.

Introduction: The Poseidon project is a carbon storage project in the Leman gas field offshore UK in production since the sixties. This licence will be the first CO2 injection in the UK with several challenges regarding the Monitoring Measurement and Verification (MMV) plan. As part of the monitoring technologies for the Pilot injection, the focused seismic solution will be implemented at the end of 2024. This active seismic solution detects changes in specific subsurface areas, called Spots, using only one source and one receiver per spot (Al Khatib et al, 2021). Legacy seismic data such as 3D seismic, velocity model and raw seismic gather are at the core of this focused seismic monitoring analysis. Two advantages of the spot seismic concerns the spot location accuracy and the optimum location for source and receiver. Depending on the field geology, Common Mid-Point (CMP) and model-based approaches will present limitations. Few hundred meters differences in X, Y locations have been observed for several spots on the Leman gas field when comparing CMP. Aside of ray path propagations in the subsurface, signal to noise ratio is also paramount with such a light amount of seismic data and legacy data are key to ensure the best seismic quality possible. To determine each source and receiver location, a demigration is performed followed by an optimum selection. This paper is demonstrating the importance of using such algorithms and not the CMP assumption, even in non-complex geological context on two practical examples. The impact of geological dips added with the streamer data orientation highlight the errors made when using this assumption. Also, by capitalizing on the legacy data, this technology ensures that the quality of the acquired trace will be optimal for CO2 detection.

Geophysical monitoring of CO2 storage at industrial scale is more challenging than it might initially appear. With over sever years of experience in frequent focused seismic, it was only natural to Elodie Morgan, co-founder and COO of SpotLigh, to share her expertise with workshop participants and panelists. The workshop focused on the needs and requirements for Measurement, Monitoring, and Verification (MMV) plans, as well as experiences and examples from field sites and various monitoring solutions.

Spotlight’s Predictive Maintenance approach offers a fast and cost-efficient solution to effectively track the expansion of CO2 in the subsurface. This innovative method is a game-changer in the CCS monitoring space, gaining the trust of operators and regulators worldwide. Spotlight’s growing portfolio includes both onshore and offshore projects in North America, Europe, and Australia. Their solutions have been used in world-first projects such as the Greensand CCS project (the first CO2 injection in Denmark) and the Poseidon UK CCS project (the first CO2 injection in the UK).

Abstract: Focused monitoring of a few “spot” locations strategically placed on a CCS field appear as a good candidate for long term monitoring of CO2 storage. However, when compared to regular 4D seismic methods, the sparsity of data may appear as a source of uncertainty, due to the sensitivity of the method to velocity models and placement of sources and receivers on field. In this paper, we show that, when included in the processing chain, uncertainty analysis provides additional information that proves valuable in interpreting the CO2 detection results.

Introduction: In this article, the question of how frequently to monitor CO2 geological storage fields is explored. The proposed approach integrates flow model output with targeted seismic monitoring, enabling strategic validation of flow models hypothesis

Abstract:

Geophysical Research for Gigatonnes CO2 Storage – SEG workshop’s second part goal was to produce a set of geophysical recommendations for geological carbon sequestration for operators and regulators. To accomplish this, small teams submitted
recommendations for geophysical methods. SpotLight presented the small team proposal 1.

SpotLight presentation focused on Spot Seismic and Predictive Maintenance.
